Computer MaintenanceOne of the more important things to do to ensure the long life of a computer is preventive maintenance. This includes occasional opening of the computers and dusting the inside of the case, board, heatsink and fans to remove accumulated dust which can cause the computer and it's components to run hot.
There is a lot of dust in the air and since computer case fans move it through the case to cool it, dust can accumulate within just months of normal use. Regular maintenance should include opening of the case and blowing the dust off critical components at least yearly, if not twice yearly. Another thing which needs maintenance is the hard drive and file system. In windows operating systems, the file system can become fragmented. This is often because the amount of allocated file handles is inadequate and the operating system can't keep contiguous files together. his can be patched by performing regular disc defragmentation. A more permanent remedy is to increase the number of file handles. Part of computer maintenance is also keeping the operating system patched and updated as well as updating programs against malicious exploits. Additionally antivirus and antispyware software needs to be kept up to date to prevent infections. Computers should be scanned for viruses and malware regularly. Tampa Computer RepairComputer failure can happen even with the most careful maintenance schedule. Frequent causes are power surges and brown outs of power as well as power surges from lightning strikes. The most common components damaged from these are the power supply and the network interface card. However any component to the motherboard can be damaged from this.
Sometimes when power outages happen or when windows machines are turned off abnormally files may become damaged or corrupted. Ideally, computer systems should have surge protectors between their power supplies and the electrical outlets and there would be an uninterruptible power supply as well to catch brown outs and power outages. The reality is however, that most small to medium sized businesses and nearly all home users don't have UPS systems to protect the desktop computers. All users should have surge protectors however, especially here in the Tampa area as Tampa is the lightning capital of the world. In some cases, multiple computers in a business or even in a home are damaged by a single power surge. When failures happen, components can be replaced and file systems can be repaired and in worst case scenarios restored. When computer failures occur, feel free to contact us to assess the damage and to suggest repair or replacement of the affected components. Additionally, there may be cost effective measures to minimize future exposure. To get started, call us at 813-748-3055. |
