Computer Maintenance
One of the more important things to do to ensure the long life of a computer is preventive maintenance. This includes occasional opening of the computers and dusting the inside of the case, board, heatsink and fans to remove accumulated dust which can cause the computer and it's components to run hot.

There is a lot of dust in the air and since computer case fans move it through the case to cool it, dust can accumulate within just months of normal use. Regular maintenance should include opening of the case and blowing the dust off critical components at least yearly, if not twice yearly.
Another thing which needs maintenance is the hard drive and file system. In windows operating systems, the file system can become fragmented. This is often because the amount of allocated file handles is inadequate and the operating system can't keep contiguous files together. his can be patched by performing regular disc defragmentation. A more permanent remedy is to increase the number of file handles.
Part of computer maintenance is also keeping the operating system patched and updated as well as updating programs against malicious exploits. Additionally antivirus and antispyware software needs to be kept up to date to prevent infections. Computers should be scanned for viruses and malware regularly.
