One of the more important aspects to computer security is implementing a regular schedule of updates to software systems. There are many known exploits to commercial software programs. Software companies are constantly patching vulnerabilities to their software programs.

In larger business environments, there is often an update server that downloads updates and which pushes those updates to other servers and to desktop computers. In smaller business environments, usually these updates need to be installed manually. Oftentimes, the necessary updates to programs aren't automatic in notifying the users of the need to install them. Or, if they are users neglect to do so out of the inconvenience of waiting for the updates and then restarting the system afterward.

In the event of Windows systems updates, this can be dangerous. In the case of anti-virus updates it can be devastating. A single virus can damage data on a single drive, or in the event of a poorly protected network can destroy data across an entire network of computers.

In addition to anti-virus software  there are also specialized software to protect the computer from spyware, malware and from email spam. Each of these are different from anti-virus software and each need to be updated on a regular basis to be effective.
